CCTV -Video Surveillance Systems

Introduction

Commonly know as CCTV, it basically consists of Surveillance Cameras, Digital Video Recorder -DVR and Video Monitor. It is used mainly for security application for home - maid/child/elder monitoring, retail outlets, building, hotel, condominium, construction site, factory, schools, etcs. It is increasingly commonly used in public spaces for crime prevention. Since the terrorist attack in year 2001 at WTC in the US, it has created a new national market known as Homeland Security.

Cameras are usually CCD type and typically divided into Dome, Box (regular) and Infrared Red (IR) type. It come with fixed angle lens for generally application. Each type of camera are designed for difference applications, e.g. indoor, outdoor,environmental and lighting. Dome type is the most common and it is mostly used indoor. For outdoor type, auto-iris and variable focal length lens should be used.. For dark place, camera with Infrared Red light is required. However, manufacturers are now incorporating IR features in all their camera. Powerful Speed Dome camera with pan, tilt and zoom function up to 100X zoom with preset-tour are used for high security industrial, power/utilities and military installations.

Digital Video Recorder (DVR) provides live viewing, multiplexing - the displaying of multi cameras into single monitor, recording, playback and network/Internet functions. Models come in difference size of 4, 8 & 16 video inputs. Recording are stored in Hard disk. Almost all have motion detects recording function to record only necessary events and therefore prolong recording storage. DVR is either Embedded (Box) Type or PC Based type. Embedded type are generally cheaper simple and easy to operate. PC based type are powerful which incorporate host of function such as Intelligence Monitoring as in Video Analytic, Point of Sales (POS) Integration, Access Control Integration, Central Monitoring Station (CMS) & Control, Hybrid IP Solutions etcs.

CCTV an abbreviation for Closed Circuit TeleVision. However due to it is no longer ‘closed circuit’ as opposed to ‘Television’ which is broadcast -open, during earlier day, it is not an appropriate term anymore. But it is still commonly used for convenience.

Video Surveillance Systems are very affordable now due to it very low price caused by stiff competitions among manufacturers, suppliers/importers and installer/security integrator. So it is helping many homes, businesses and organizations in maintaining security in their premises.

Another type of system which use IP or Network Cameras and Network Video Recorder is gaining popularity. IP cameras is increasingly using Megapixel technology to provide High Definition (HD) quality for image for viewing and storage. Hybrid DVR system are also available which combine traditional analogue cameras with IP cameras.

Video Surveillance is effective deterrence against theft, shoplifting and pilferage. With the increase in labor cost, Video Surveillance together with other security tools such as intrusion alarm and access control can be used to cuts down dramatically the number of manpower needed in maintaining the security of premises.
